About This Event:

Waite Park, along with Antioch Church, will be hosting showings of the documentary Eyes on the Prize. This documentary outlines the American Civil Rights Movement. The showings of this documentary will happen on Thursday nights from 6:30-8:30 starting on June 13th. The first event will be hosted at Waite Park, with the location alternating between Waite Park and Antioch Church. Each showing will be followed by a time for discussion. We hope this is an eye-opening experience, and we hope you’re able to join us for some or all of these events. Snacks and beverages will be provided.

Eyes on the Prize recounts the story of the civil rights era from the point of view of the ordinary men and women whose extraordinary actions launched a movement that fought to end decades of discrimination and segregation. It is the story of the people — young and old, male and female, northern and southern — who, compelled by a meeting of conscience and circumstance, worked to eradicate a world where whites and blacks could not go to the same school, ride the same bus, vote in the same election, or participate equally in society. It was a world in which peaceful demonstrators were met with a resistance and brutality which are now nearly incomprehensible to many young Americans but were the fabric of American life back then and embodied a struggle whose reverberations continue to be felt today.
